There is no cure for culture shock, but being realistic and expecting it can help you manage it - in yourself and in others.
The average length of time it takes people to feel at home in the new country is about one year. The hardest part is usually between 3 - 6 months into the assignment. This is where most people experience a degree of culture shock.
Unexpected differences come as a shock after the euphoria of the previous months. Rejection, disorientation and a feeling of isolation are part of culture shock....
and a NORMAL part of adjusting to living in a new country.
Most people expect large obstacles such as a different language or intricate systems of protocol, but it is frequently the little, unexpected differences that set our teeth on edge.
These can snowball into negative thinking about the new country and result in us feeling down.
The timing of culture shock can vary. It can occur earlier to the person who interacts most with the local culture, or if there is unexpected illness.
How we react to culture shock is similar to how we react to stress. It is important to look out for the symptoms in ourselves and in those around us.
TIPS FOR GETTING THROUGH CULTURE SHOCK
==============================
1. Get involved - with the local community and people. Do this as soon as you arrive. The unpacking and getting the house ready can wait!
2. Find people to support you. This is especially important if you are not working and have to rebuild your support network. Seek out other (positive!)expats - they understand what you are going through and can help.
3. Remember that just because it's different it doesn't make it bad! Keep an open mind and try to see things from other's perspectives.
4. Plan things to look forward to. These will lift your spirits and keep you moving forward.
5. Look after yourself - take time out for you, slow down, eat right, get a good nights sleep, exercise and try to laugh often!
6. Remember that this too shall pass. If you want to have a shorter and easier transition, then find a coach or mentor who can support you!
